ADM Admission Requirements

In addition to the general NTU requirements, all applicants seeking entry to the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree program at the School of Art, Design and Media are required to prepare and submit the following materials for admission assessment.

1. Portfolio

All applicants are required to submit a portfolio that consists of 12 to 20 examples of work that they have completed recently. It is recommended that they select examples of work that reflects their interests, experience and competencies in the arts. This work may be in any media; two-dimensional, three dimensional, time-based, games, audio recording, scripts, website etc. They may be in finished form or as preparatory work (sketches etc) and may be the result of assigned class projects or of self-directed exploration. If they have been done as a result of a group project then the applicant’s creative role in that project must be clearly stated or the work will not be considered for review.
All submitted work must be reproductions of originals. No original artwork should be submitted. We currently do not accept online portfolios.

2. Personal Statement

All applicants are required to submit one sample of writing that should, in no more than 300 words:

• Tell us what leads them to seek an art and design education at ADM.
• Why they are uniquely qualified to join ADM.
• Specify three creative individuals who have influenced them and what it is that they like about them.

3. Creative Writing/Film

All applicants are required to submit a response to ONE of the following two creative briefs:

Creative Brief 1:
Using no more than 50 words and in three paragraphs applicant are to complete the following sentence: ‘The man sat outside his house…’
Creative Brief 2:
In a film that lasts no longer than 1 minute address the idea of change.

4. Drawing

Applicants are required to submit three separate drawings based on the following instructions:

Drawing 1:
A drawing from observation (i.e. the actual thing that you are drawing is in front of you) of an organic object (e.g. head, hand, flower etc). This drawing will test the applicant’s ability to draw realistically.
Drawing 2:
A drawing of a graphic form that can be repeated as a pattern (e.g. wallpaper design, fabric pattern etc). This drawing will test the applicant’s ability to draw in a design-orientated manner (i.e. flat, tidy, attention to shapes etc).
Drawing 3:
A sequence of two or more drawings on one piece of paper (e.g. a comic strip, story board etc) that tell a story about a bird. This drawing will test the applicant’s ability to communicate narrative.

Each drawing must be done using graphite pencil on an A4 sheet of white paper measuring 29.7cm x 21cm; no other drawing materials may be used.

These drawings must be submitted in their original form, not as reproductions.
Applicants must ensure that they write their full name and official application number on the back of each drawing.

Format of Submission Package
Submission of admission assessment materials must include a self‐addressed stamped envelope or box of correct size and with sufficient postage. Applicant should ensure that the envelope is padded for protection of their portfolio materials. We cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during postage. All Undergraduate applicants must send their portfolio to the Office of Admissions & Financial Aid (OAFA) directly.

The Submissions Package should follow EXACTLY the following guidelines:

Two dimensional and Three dimensional work:
All images of work must be submitted as either “.jpg” or “.tif” file formats. Each individual file should not exceed 3MB. All images must be no larger than 576 X 720 pixels.
Time Based work:
Time based work such as film, video, sound or performance must be prepared according to the following formats:

Videos: .flv, .avi, .mov Up to 60 MB each
Audio: .mp3 Up to 10 MB each

Applicants are required to keep their submissions to under 5 minutes. They may include multiple clips of different projects within this 5-minute limit (i.e. ‘showreels’). Remember: the applicant’s role in group projects must be clearly stated or the work will not be reviewed.
Interactive Multimedia work:
All games, websites, audio works and interactive documentation must be prepared according to the following formats:

Videos: .flv, .avi, .mov Up to 60 MB each
Audio: .mp3, .aif, .wav Up to 10 MB each
Flash & Web: Html files with all links operational

Executable game & interactive files, including Flash, must be playable on both the Macintosh and Windows operating systems.
Samples of Written Creative and Research Materials:
Creative writing, stories, scripts, narratives or research papers may be submitted as part of the applicant’s portfolio. Applicants are to submit their work as “.pdf” or “.doc” formats.
Organization of CD Contents:
The name of CD must be:
AdmissionsNumber_FamiliyName_Initial
e.g. A00075881_WONG_J
Inside the CD must be THREE folders:
Portfolio
Personal_Statement
Creative_Writing_Film
All material in all folders should be named according to the following format:
FileNumber_FamiliyName_Initial.FileExtension
e.g. 01_WONG_J.jpg
Important things to note:
Applicants are strongly advised to test their files on both PC and Macintosh to ensure that they open and run smoothly.
Applicants should attention to all submission deadlines.

Academic Honesty
By placing their name on submitted work it is understood that the applicants are claiming sole authorship of the work (with the declared exception of collaborative projects). Any applicant who is found to be plagiarizing someone else’s work or engaging in other forms of academic dishonesty, will not be considered for review.

Theme:

My portfolio will be themed as “Impressionist”. Impressionist art is a style in which the artist captures the image of an object as someone would see it if they just caught a glimpse of it. My work for either types of media will be either how I first view it or hear it and I’ll make my works in a way that when my audience see it, immediately, they will be attracted to it. An example will be controlling the lighting effect as light effect can create certain impression to the image.It also helps to emphasis on certain areas such as the message in words or through movements that I will want to portray.

Objectives:

This portfolio is created to showcase my works for either my prospective employers or to get into an ideal university. For the university requirements, this portfolio is to reflect my interests, experience and competencies in the arts. As for my prospective employers, this portfolio is to show my capability in handling the job scope of the company.

Skills to show:

I’ll be showcasing my skills in the media such as two-dimensional, three dimensional, time-based, games, audio recording, website, photography etc.

To display my skills, I’ll be using software like Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection, HTML etc.

Presentation:

I’ll be presenting my work through a webpage full of colours of my own. In the webpage, I’ll include navigations such as Home, About Me, Portfolio, Contact me. Under Home tab, a short description of me and updated works of mine will be published. About Me tab will include updated Information like my profile, my philosophy of design and my competency as well. As for the Portfolio tab, my work will be categorized accordingly. Each work of mine will be dated accordingly from the start of the making to the end of it. Lastly, contact will include my up to date email address, handphone number and mailing address.
